Claudette Schreuders
The Long Day

3 May - 2 June 2007

Michael Stevenson is pleased to present a new series of lithographs by Claudette Schreuders, The Long Day. These are based on Schreuders' group of sculptures of the same title (2003-4), which the artist describes as "like a diary of a personal life". The 10 lithographs, produced by master printmaker Mark Attwood of The Artists' Press, include among others the figures of The Boyfriend, The Quiet Brother, The Neighbour and Officer Molefe (characters based on the artist's experience of a neighbour being stabbed), 1970 (the artist's father holding a small buck), The Long Day, New Shoes and The Missing Person (a self-portrait). These lithographs follow on from the series Burnt by the Sun (itself based on a group of sculptures made in 2001), exhibited at Michael Stevenson in 2005 (click here to view).

Schreuders was born in 1973 in Pretoria and lives in Cape Town. She recently exhibited new sculptures titled The Fall at Jack Shainman Gallery in New York (9 February - 10 March). Her solo exhibition The Long Day toured university art galleries in Tempe, Arizona; San Diego, California; Atlanta, Georgia; and Richmond, Virginia in 2004/5. Recent group exhibitions include Since 2000: Printmaking now at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (2006) and Personal Affects: Power and poetics in contemporary South African art at the Museum for African Art and the Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York (2004) and The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu (2006).
