Staged Realities
Family Ties
The universal theme of maternal (and occasional paternal) relations
transcends time and place. In the context of this exhibition, the
images range from the late 19th century ethnographically-inspired
photographs, through to the works in the pictorial tradition from the
first half of 20-century by A M Duggan-Cronin and Constance Stuart
Larrabee, and the contemporary works by Fazal Sheikh and Rotimi Fani-
Kayode. This genre is extended into contemporary art practice by
Fatimah Tuggar and Penny Siopis who imaginatively re-interpret the
theme of family ties.
