Wood ox-and-rider pipe

Representational pipes such as this are rare, and a similar carving, without the figure, is in the Kimberley Museum (see Annals of the SA Museum, XXIV, 1938, pl XCIV, fig 2). A metal bowl has been inserted into the head of the figure. Note the bead eyes used for both the ox and the figure of the man, and the use of pokerwork to darken the wood.
