The town elephant, Olifantshoek, Northern Cape. 23 June 2004

The elephant was made by Louis Gay for the inauguration of the Olifantshoek High School in 1974. Subsequently in accordance with a decision of the Town Council and the Town Clerk, a garden was created alongside the main road, and the elephant was mounted within it, to stand there as a symbol of the town. (Olifantshoek = elephants' corner or ravine)
