Christo Coetzee

mixed media

We went out to Tulbagh one day, Theys, Pekeur & I. Christo's house in Church St
amazed & delighted me. It was an Alladin's cave filled with wonderful, interesting things, collections
of sculptures, boxes & chests & swords. A vast variety of fascinating objects filled the
old house to capacity.
We talked & he spoke about his life & about people he'd known & I looked at scrap-
books while we drank wine. Later he hosted us at a superb lunch at Paddagang.

Before we left we were each given the choice of a work, heads in the PROFILE series
formed by the careful dripping of enamel paint on paper.

In retrospect I think of Christo Coetzee, a marvelous artist, & the richness of his life
which resulted in a generosity so amazing in the way he responded to people he
enjoyed meeting & knowing, but more so in the colourul flamboyant manner of
creating art.
