Alberto Burri

"--- He was a doctor during the war, & first began to paint in 1944, in a prison
camp in Texas. When he was set free, he gave up his practice in order to
continue painting. His first exhibition was held in 1974. Burri is best known
for works made of sacking & old rags: his reason for using these materials
was that they reminded him of the blood-soaked bandages he had seen in war time.
--- The programme put forward to justify these works is the existentialist
one of metaphysical anguish, but what strikes one instead is their good
taste, their easy sensuousness."
