"Mom" I said, "Please, don't hum I'M DREAMING OF
A WHITE CHRISTMAS. It's annoying."
"Okay," she said. "I won't."
She sat silent while I went on painting her portrait.
She sat there silent for so long that after
a while I couldn't help saying, "A penny for your
thoughts." Anything to break the silence.
"Well," Mom said, "I was wondering if you'd
decorate a fan for me sometime. I'd like that."
"Sure," I said.
"With a Nocturne theme?" she asked.
"No problem," I said. "No problem at all."
