After Sharaku (18th century artist of Kabuki theatre)

mixed media
50 x 35cm

An enthusiastic audience,
we of course,
admire hero, heroine,
samurai, courtier, courtesan
& acknowledge the well-played nasty villan
with applause.
We ignore the fact that there
are men who masquerade as maids.
A gorgeous kimono,
the swirl of fabric,
swish-flick of fan, of sword,
a flash of vivid colour, quick,
stylized movement.
In Kabuki we see
them mime & mince while they go
this way, that way,
across the stage
in roles they play.
