She'd be coming for a little snack-dinner he'd cook for
her so the whole crew was there, uitgehonger as usual,
smoking dagga in the red living-room & drinking Lieberstein
out of by then grubby glasses with the red bulb-
light on, paintings & drawings by Pete, Fikile & others
on the walls, Coltrane LP doing its thing so loud
you & you knew, the whole neighbourhood hoped you
weren't all going to end up with eardrums busted, but
me feeling good wearing my favourite blue shirt, not
holding a fan in my hand pretending to be cool so that
if the Special Branch burst in we ouens, the whole crew,
me in my cool blue shirt, Coltrane & the tea merchant
Ladowski could all rise to the occasion, with a radical
racial clash of symbols & cymbals with Jay yelling
manely through the haze & stench of dagga smoke,
"Hey, Yaroobah Gypsies. Ya-a-roo-oobah Gypsies."
